Breaking the Bias in Tailoring

Women’s International Day 2022

This year’s theme is “Breaking The Bias”.

Imagine a gender-neutral world….

When I think about what it means to be a woman on International Women’s Day, the words that come to my mind are Power and Resilience.

When we learn to combine both these forces, we can literally change the world.

Take me for example. Some of you may know that alongside Gresham, I am co-founder of Gresham Blake.

Me, proudly wearing the first suit Gresham made for me

Now, traditionally, Bespoke Tailoring is very male-dominated and posh.

I have a few traits that did not quite fit into that mould.

Firstly, I am female.

Secondly, I am not white.

Thirdly, I am very vertically challenged!

I am not what you would typically expect as ‘YOUR BESPOKE CONSULTANT’ if you were buying a suit in Savile Row.  And, over the years, I have surprised a number of my client at that first consultation when I have said that I will be looking after them today.

However, what I have found, is what people want is – simply people that are very dedicated to what they do and have skills and knowledge to back that up.

From the first bespoke suit that Gresham made from me, I was completely hooked on tailoring.

My vision was to be able to provide this to everybody, in particular women.

At Gresham Blake, we now specialise in women’s bespoke tailoring.  We have created patterns and designs which produce empowering garments, whatever direction you want to take.  Designing a women’s bespoke suit is the ultimate gender-neutral experience, where you can find yourself and express who you are through a beautifully tailored, stylish garment.

Bespoke tailoring has not been on most women’s radars, in part, because it has been so closely associated with menswear, but also because it’s been sold with the image of ‘gentlemen’s clubs’ and ‘country estates.’

For me, it’s completely the opposite.  I want to break those stuffy stereotypes and simply make well made, contemporary clothing for the individual.

More and more women are getting frustrated with the process of finding things that fit them well.  I am proud of the ladies tailoring services we provide.

And did you know that 80% of the Gresham Blake team are Female?

“Ohh, it’s a women’s tailor”, I still get that a lot.

“For goodness sakes, so what?”

I’ve earned my ‘pinstripes.’

Fun Fact

Unlike nuclear DNA, your mitochondrial DNA can only be passed down from your mother!

The mitochondria are specialised for producing the energy that each cell needs to function, and it is the reason that we can move our muscles or even think thoughts.

“On this International Women’s Day, I would like to thank my mum, my mother-in-law, and the generations of females rooted in my history for my internal strength.”

The coronavirus pandemic has thrown countless weddings off-course.

According to Hello magazine, a staggering 4 out of 5 couples have had to postpone their weddings in 2020.

But for some couples, lockdown life has only accelerated the impulse to say “I do” — even when they previously had no firm plans to do so. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but being thrust together amid stay-at-home orders can, in some instances, work its own magic.

Here Molly Hopkins, from Gresham Blake speaks to Tim and Alice, who decided to tie the knot during Lockdown.

  • Tell us a bit about you wedding and the changes it faced due to lockdown?

I didn’t really believe everyone when they said weddings were stressful. Turns out that I was wrong, and they are a bit of a pickle. Not sure how much of that is down to the day itself, or in our case, trying to hold an event during a pandemic.  Due to the restrictions, we had to move our wedding one week earlier than planned. Queue a panic to change the venue, the food, the priest, the guestlist. We had to make sure everything was COVID-19-secure – not quite the romantic moment you envision for the big day.

  • Tell us about your wedding outfit.

I’d explored a few different tailors and suit shops online, not quite finding anything that stood out from the crowd. A suit for a wedding is meant to be special, and everything I’d seen was either the complete bells and whistles (and tails) – or bland and boring. After a long day of stumbling through various shops in Brighton, I visited Gresham Blake and found the one for me. Classic fit, subtle interesting pattern. Not too flashy, definitely not boring – perfect. A few fittings later and it was a done deal.

How would you describe your wedding day?

I’d have never quite imagined my wedding day to unfold quite the way it did. Masks on (is everyone having a good time?), no hugs (elbows had to do), and finished by 10pm. Still had the most fantastic day, surrounded by a small number of close friends and family. While I can’t say I wouldn’t have changed anything, the day meant absolutely everything to us.

Congratulations Tim and Alice and thanks so much for sharing your day with us.

A case of LOVE WINS.

Virtual Tailoring Appointments

During Lock Down 3 we want to carry on providing the best possible service for clients in these testing circumstances. Therefore, we are very pleased to continue to offer our virtual consultation service.

The first stage will be an introductory call with one of our bespoke tailoring consultants to have a preliminary discussion on what you want and how we can help you.  We can then arrange a video call upon which we can show you fabrics, designs and discuss your requirements in much more detail.  We can also arrange to send you cloth samples to your home address.

We can then have as many follow up video consultations that you may require and that we are confident that we have the right information to make your perfect suit.

For existing clients, we can take measures previously used. For new clients, depending on the urgency of your suit we can either go through a virtual measuring process or schedule a provisional date that you can come in to be measured following government guidelines.

To Book a Virtual Appointment, simply use our ONLINE CALENDAR, and during Lock down we will call you to discuss

For us, most importantly, if you arrange a virtual appointment, we can purchase your fabrics & schedule your production.  At least this way, everything will be ready at our workshop awaiting your measures.  This is particularly important for those of you who have deadlines for events.

Following completion of the garments, if COVID 19 restrictions allow, we would then love to invite you to our Brighton or London store for a fitting with our tailoring team.  If there are any alterations needed, we can do this as soon we are allowed.

Should the restrictions not allow, we can send the garments directly to your home.  If you need the suit urgently, we can arrange a video ‘fitting’ call whereby, we can see you in your suit, and make recommendations for alterations needed.  We would then arrange the best way of getting the suit to us in Brighton, where we our workshop can complete alterations for you.

To Book a Virtual Appointment, simply use our ONLINE CALENDAR, and during Lock down we will call you to discuss

Bespoke Tailoring during Lockdown

Like most industries, ours has been very much affected by the pandemic.

Our brand has been built through a lot of determination and dedication and we will NOT let this pandemic get us down.

Admittedly, Lock Down 1 was a SHOCKER. We did hardly any business in tailoring. With business and leisure travel, weddings, anniversary celebrations, graduation ceremonies curtailed or cancelled, and with many working from home (in cosy clothes rather than suits) people had very little reason to dress up.

Luckily for us, we did have a ready to wear clothing online presence. I apologize in advance for the huge number of mailshots that I have sent over the last few months.  You see, when I send a mailshot, we always get more sales, and that is what has helped us survive so far.

We were overwhelmed by the support you lot showed us.  Some of you even supported our brand during the lockdowns by purchasing vouchers online, in advance, for suits that you would have later. Buy now, be measured later.  We will be ever grateful to those clients.

Every little bit of business helped our brand survive.

And then came the GB Face Mask. Gresham designed these in the summer of 2019 following a motorbike trip to Vietnam, where Gresham researched the best face mask to wear on his journey. He then went on to use this design for a photoshoot we did in the summer of 2019 to showcase our SS2020 collections.

Our Spring Summer 2020 Campaign, photograph taken in Summer 2019, I mean, who knew!

Little did we know how poignant this would be in the next year ahead. This year, after much debate on our part, we decided to manufacture the GB Face Mask. We knew that we would be able to offer an outstanding product for the market and we could make them look good too. We have been overwhelmed by how well these have been received. This product has also kept our business alive.

But it is the actual hands-on Bespoke Tailoring that we have missed so much.  The one-to-one consultations.  The ‘catch-ups’ we had with our friendly clients.

Gresham measuring the super cool D-Double E in our London Consulting Rooms

At the peak of the Lockdown One, we had to ask ourselves: how important could a suit be during these times?

A suit is worthy of investments more than ever to those who appreciate its utility and value.

Whilst we have all realized that less is more in our lives, unlike fast fashion, which is dependent on trends, a Bespoke Suit with a superior material, proper construction and ample care can be worn to last for years.

Gresham fitting Mr. Coogan in our Brighton Consulting Rooms

In the months that we were allowed to open, we observed more and more people suiting up, couples being more decisive than ever with their wedding plans and their intention to tie the knot sooner rather than later.

Definitely a case of, ‘Love wins, and life must go on.’

We LOVED getting back into hands on tailoring.

The GB Tailoring Team ✂️

So now we are in Lock Down 3. In anticipation of better days (vaccines are now being rolled out), Team GB would like to remind you, that even though we are shut, our appointment diary is open.

We have adapted and are confidently able to use video messaging such as Zoom or WhatsApp, so that we can initially meet virtually and go through style and design and cloths.

Fal Blake having an Online Consultation with Harry for his wedding suit.

Nathalie, having an online consult with Steve who is prepping to look smart after Lock Down 3.

A ‘Virtual Appointment’ can get the whole thing started. In a way, its a great way to begin to design your suit as there is so much to think about in having your perfect suit and this way you will get the time to really be able to research, with our help.

Following your ‘Virtual Appointment’ we will schedule the production time into our workshop plans, so that as soon as we are able to open, and you can come in to be measured, we will have everything ready for you.

This is particularly important for those of you who may have an event on the horizon. If we can have an online consultation with you during Lock Down, we can narrow down cloth and design choices and also optimize our planning and production so that we can prioritise your suit.

Over Lockdown 3, we will be running a special promotion, that will ensure, that when life does return to normal, we will help you ensure you put ‘Your Best Foot Forward.’ By committing to a minimum spend of £1000 on a Bespoke Suit, and putting down a £500 deposit, online, we will make you a pair of Bespoke Shoes to complement your Bespoke Suit, worth £385. Alternatively, we will make you a waistcoat to go with your Bespoke Suit, free of charge.

If you would like to take advantage of this, simply CLICK on the image below.

Alternatively, BOOK your appointment in our Online Calendar and we will call you to discuss and give you more information

We will then be in touch with you and schedule either a Video Call to discuss all your options and start making plans for the production of your suit.

At Gresham Blake, we are determined not to let our Sartorial Elegance fall.  As soon as we are allowed to open, the day-to-day fittings, consultations and measurements will be back on, utilizing 100% of the governments guidelines to ensure safety.  Until then, we can still part do the process virtually via Zoom.

Today, we’re sharing a guide to our bespoke tailoring process and the radical difference it makes when it’s time to shine.

A force to be reckoned with, a suitably suave trio in their GB bespoke suits.

What is a Bespoke Suit?

Any clothing retailer can offer a suit that looks great off the peg. Yet, unless it’s designed to fit your exact measurements, it could end up both uncomfortable and unsightly once you try it on.

That’s why it pays to invest in Bespoke Tailoring.

We have a team of Expert Tailors at both our Shoreditch London and Brighton stores. When you choose the bespoke route, you’ll work with our tailors from the very beginning to create the perfect suit. We’ll spare no detail and take everything into consideration.

While the entire process takes around eight weeks, we can accommodate shorter timelines by special request by the customer. Let’s take a look at the process from start to finish.

Fabric Selection

Bespoke Cloth

From weddings and graduations to corporate events and galas, we understand that sometimes, you need a one-of-a-kind fabric that we don’t have in stock. If that’s the case, we’re more than happy to help you create it.

Our skilled design team will walk you through each step of this exciting and rewarding journey, taking into account both the exterior fabric and lining of your suit. Whether you’re creating a printed lining, suiting or shirting, we’ll help bring your ideas to life. We specialize in print design and woven jacquards!

Premium Cloths

While we have access to an extensive range of British milled cloths, we can also interpret a variety of other fabrics upon request. You can design your own print, insert panels, and add seams as desired!

Some of our premium fabric choices designed for suits and waistcoats include:

  • Mohair
  • Wool
  • Linen/ Cotton/ Silk

Model is wearing Midnight Mohair 2 Piece Suit

What is Mohair?

This luxuriously soft fabric is made from the hair of an Angora goats. Renowned around the world for its glistening sheen, mohair is also one of the most durable and great-wearing materials on the market!

It was huge in the 60’s – all the Mod’s wore Mohair and looked super sharp.

And by the way, did you know Mohair is James Bond cloth of choice? Give me a better reason to joining the Mohair club than that!

Model is wearing Navy Worsted Chalk Stripe 2 Piece Suit

Prefer a wool suit? It’s one of the most timeless and attractive options, but it’s far from standard. As not all wool is created equal, let’s review how to discern the difference.

Understanding Worsted Wool and the Super System

In short, worsted wool is comprised of long fibres spun into a fine yarn. The result? A cloth that is sleek, refined and perfect for a variety of suit types. In addition to being attractive and versatile, worsted wool is also:

  • Breathable
  • Sturdy
  • Water-resistant
  • Wrinkle-resistant

If you’ve decided to use this fabric for your bespoke suit, your next step will be to navigate the Super System. These are the series of numbers that you’ve likely seen while shopping for a suit in the past. What do they mean?

The Super System is designed to represent the fabric’s fineness. Put simply, the number dictates how many times the wool has been twisted. As that count rises, so does the look and feel of the material. Still, all varieties possess the premium qualities of worsted wool.

For instance, a Super 180 suit will have a smoother appearance than a Super 80 suit, but that doesn’t mean the latter is lower quality. It will simply have a coarser and sturdier look. As a general rule of thumb, higher-number suits are reserved for more special occasions while lower-count varieties are ideal for regular, everyday use.

As you do your research and browse your options, keep in mind that the Super System is not internationally standardised. Our team of tailors has its own guide and will advise you on the ideal number count that’s appropriate to your needs.

Design-Led Tailoring

There’s no designer touch we can’t add. Our tailors will take every consideration to help to create a design that fits your event and surpass your expectations. When you want to showcase your individual style, we’re your go-to Tailor!

While we pride ourselves in creating suits that “wow” on the outside, we know that true craftsmanship is in the details. That’s why we focus on the minute features that make a bespoke suit so special, including hand-sewn buttonholes, hand-stitched linings and turn-back collars.

We LOVE little accents of fun and will guide you with what works.  For example, our very special client Mr. Honey likes Bumblebees embroidered under his top collar. This is embroidered onto a melton, which can also be in a contrasting colour.

These personal touches make the suit YOURS.

Measurements and Fittings

Our team will normally require only one to two fittings to make sure your new suit fits exactly the way it’s meant to. Our professionals can utilise contemporary or traditional tailoring techniques depending on your preferences.

Our contemporary tailoring services are more modern in nature, offering enhanced flexibility over traditional tailors. We’ll create any pattern or style you desire, and make sure it fits like a charm before your big reveal.

With a traditional tailoring experience, we’ll create a personal pattern that fits your measurements. Then, we’ll construct the garment with a loose canvas, allowing it to mould perfectly to your body shape and movements. This way, you can rest assured that your suit will flow as effortlessly and stylishly as you do, all night long.

At Gresham Blake, our Bespoke Tailoring Services are very competitively priced. We don’t have the same overheads as Savile Row and we are a family business, so there is no middle men in our brand.

So, how much does a bespoke garment cost?

This depends completely on how much the cloth costs (not so much the design) and how long you give us to make the garment.

However, just because a cloth is more expensive, does not necessarily mean it’s a better cloth.

All of the fabrics we use are extremely high end.

If you give us a guide price, we will make sure we stick to this.
